Mass digitization is underway at many libraries through international partnerships such as the Open Content Alliance, Microsoft Live Books and Google Books. The University of Toronto Libraries and the Internet Archive have been collaborating on mass digitization projects since late 2004. Currently the Toronto scanning centre maintains 23 Internet Archive “Scribe” machines, capable of digitizing between 40-50 million pages of text per annum. This talk will review the history of UTL’s involvement with mass digitization within the wider context of how the various projects relate to the Google books initiative and the ultimate potential that mass digitization presents to scholarship.
