| Library Services for Lawyers, Law Firms and Government Departments (External Borrowers) This page sets out the services that the Bora Laskin Law Library provides to law firms, government departments and other eligible external institutional borrowers. Access to the Bora Laskin Law LibraryAccess to the print collection of the Bora Laskin Law Library is open to all persons during normal hours of operation who need to conduct legal research and use the resources within the library. Access to certain electronic resources is limited to registered law students due to licensing restrictions. Only persons with valid library cards may borrow material. Patrons without valid library cards who wish to read short-term loan material within the library must leave valid I.D. with the circulation desk when they borrow this material from behind the circulation desk. The I.D. will be returned when the material is returned to the desk Check out our location and library hours on our About the Library web page Library cards for external borrowersLawyers, law firms, government departments and other eligible external institutional borrowers have a couple of options to obtain a library card to borrow books from the Bora Laskin Law Library:
Please note: Not all materials at the Bora Laskin Law Library circulate (case law reporters and journals, for example, are in-library use only). In addition, we do not at this time recognize the Associate Membership card issued by Robarts Library. Borrowing privileges for external borrowersBorrowing privileges vary, depending on the type of card.
Fines for external borrowersFines are charged at the rate of 0.50/day per book; no fines are charged for the first day a book is overdue. Fines on Short Term Loan books are 0.50/hour to a maximum of $7.50 a day; no fines are charged for the first 15 minutes a book is late. Fines for recalled books are $2.00/day per book. Library privileges are
withheld when the block limit is reached, until fines are paid. Photocopying and printingLibrary photocopy machines are self-service and are operated by a copy card or cash. Copying and printing costs 15 cents per page. All copiers accept visitors cards. Blank visitors cards are available for purchase for $5.00. In order to use these cards to photocopy or print you must add value to the card via the "cash to card' machine in the library. There is a laser printer on the main floor for printing from the computers in the Law Commons Where do I get reference and research help? The reference desk is staffed from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. (tel: (416) 978-1072). To the extent possible, we provide basic reference help to law firms and other non-University patrons. For reference questions taking longer than 10 minutes, we reserve our right to then negotiate a fee-for-service arrangement ($80 per hour). Document delivery servicesWe deliver books and journal articles to law firms, government departments and other eligible institutional external borrowers. Requests for service must be made in writing to or by fax to (416) 978-8396. Requests received after 2:00 pm will be processed the next business day unless you also speak with the Access Services Coordinator (tel: 416: 978-3719) and make arrangements for "rush delivery." Most organizations arrange at their expense to have a courier pickup materials from our circulation desk (78 Queen's Park, Toronto ON M5S 2C5) upon notification that the materials are ready for pick-up. Fees (effective September 1st 2007):
*A "rush" is defined as needing the item in 2 hours or less. **For requests we receive that have incomplete or incorrect citations that require our staff to search or verify the citations, there will be a $5.00 charge for each citation we are required to search Access Copyright charges (not including GST):
We ask all of our document delivery customers to first check the University's online catalogue to verify that we have the items you need. There is no separate catalogue for just the Bora Laskin Law Library; the catalogue shows the listings of all campus libraries. To locate books held by our library, choose "Law Library (Bora Laskin)" from the pull down menu below the search box. Please note: Loose-leaf services do not circulate. If we do not have the item, you may want to check the York University Library Catalogue (4700 Keele St.) or the Great Library Catalogue (130 Queens St. E., Osgoode Subway station) to see if either of those libraries has it.
