Human Rights/Civil Rights Sites related to major constitutional mechanisms for Canada and the United States in the areas of civil rights and domestic human rights are included in these links, along with general and selected topical sites for international human rights, such as indigenous peoples', gay/lesbian, and women's rights. CanadaAlberta Civil Liberties Research Centre Provides links to civil liberties and human rights groups and organizations as well as links to full-text international human rights instruments dealing with war crimes and armed conflict, slavery, asylum and refugees, indigenous peoples, women's rights, etc. Canadian Human Rights Commission Includes the full-text of human rights legislation, news of recent human rights developments, the Human Rights Forum and other Commission publications, and links to related sites. Canadian Internet Law Resource Page : Privacy Contains articles, conference proceedings and papers, legislation and model codes, and policy papers dealing with Canadian privacy law and issues. Provides links to federal and provincial government agencies and commissions, including Electronic Frontier Canada. U.S. and InternationalHuman & Constitutional Rights Resource page at Columbia University A site which uniquely integrates sources for human rights and civil rights in both international and domestic frameworks, both within the U.S and comparatively across jurisdictions of the world. Links to IGO and NGO reports, constitutions, and a unique searchable database of comparative bills of rights materials for constitutions, using an article-by-article analytical scheme and links to the case law of the jurisdiction. The new constitution and court of South Africa formed the base documentation. University of Minnesota Human Rights Library Contains a large collection of full-text international human rights treaties, instruments, decisions, and views of treaty bodies as well as other U.N. human rights materials. American Civil Liberties Union The home page of this important American advocacy organization links to sites and pages for rights of speech, association, freedom from race or gender-based discrimination, and all the rest of the rights embodied in the amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU's mission statement, well-served at this site, is as follows: "The [ACLU] is the nation's foremost advocate of individual rights- litigating, legislating, and educating the public on a broad array of issues affecting individual freedom in the United States." Date last Visited: January 26, 2007 Provides news, information, campaigns, and useful links on human rights.The Amnesty library contains full-text annual reports, country reports, etc. Documentation Centre Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) This is a site requiring registration but is free and contains a searchable databse integrating the United Nations Treaty Bodies Database linked at the UN Home (see this list) with European case law from the Council of Europe's Human Rights system. International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) monitors human rights and compliance with the Helsinki Final Act via a federation of NGOs across regions of the world in the OSCE member states. This site links to its documentation and to those regional sites with a wealth of information and links for international human rights. Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School The Human Rights Page contains links to American and international human rights legislation. This site also includes the full text of some U.S. court decisions and a host of human rights documents. Links to human rights situations in foreign countries, and human rights organizations are provided as well. Yale Avalon Project and Human Rights Archive (DIANA) Links via Avalon to historic and current human rights documents. This organization supports the work of the global NGO community with this comprehensive site for links to non-governmental human rights organizations, advocacy projects, direct assistance to NGO's, partners for whom it builds sites, and a wealth of links and bibliographic information. Based originally in the U.S., the organization now has its headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. Civil Rights: An Overview (The Cornell Legal Information Institute) Focuses on U.S. civil rights. The site includes legislation, full text of case law, some U.N. documents as well as reports of various human rights organizations around the world. The Center is dedicated to fighting disease, hunger, poverty, conflict, and oppression through collaborative initiatives in the areas of democratization and development, global health, and revitalization. Internet resources point to a variety of finding aids, newspapers with full- text and home pages directly related to the Center's network. LawGuru.Com : Internet Law Library : Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Formerly Internet Law Library of the U.S. House of Representatives. Includes a collection of documents in full text from many jurisdictions. Provides useful links to numerous other sites dealing with indigenous peoples, gender, and religion and government. Contains compilations from sources such as the University of Minnesota, Human Rights Watch and Cornell Law School. The U.N. home page provides access to on-line databases, news and text of documents, including the U.N. charter and links to U.N. offices and agencies. Contains links to topics dealing with peace and security, international law and human rights, etc. The 'Human Rights' section provides the text of documents and treaties and reports on the status of human rights around the world. Council of Europe human rights documentation (HUDOC) European Court of Human Rights These are the home pages of the second large human rights enforcement system, that of the Council of Europe (NOT to be confused with the European Union). The European Human Rights treaty, court, and previously, a commission, enforces human rights throughout the mostly European member states. Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union Site of a new initiative by the European Union to integrate rights and freedoms into its mainly commercial arragements for achieving greater economic unity in Europe as the European Community, once commonly called the Common Market. This is a Project Web Site on Democracy and Human Rights in the Americas, with focus on the situation in some Latin American countries. Includes text of human rights conventions and instruments dealing with the environment, and related topics. Interights Commonwealth Human Rights Case Law Database This newly reactivated case law database perits searching for case law implementing human rights instruments in many jurisdictions of the world using keywords dervied from those international instruments. Currently in operation and being re-built with new material added. International Human Rights Law : Research Links Compiled by the Center for International Human Rights Law, a part of Rights International, a Non-Governmental Organization and advocacy group. This site is broad in its scope and coverage as it provides lists of both printed and on-line resources from around the world, including treaties, case law, European, Inter-American and African systems. Amercian Association for the Advancement of Science : Science and Human Rights Program The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program (SHR or the Program) was established in 1977 to give scientists a way to help their colleagues around the world whose human rights are threatened or violated. Mobilizing effective assistance to protect the human rights of scientists around the world remains central to its mission, as well as making the tools and knowledge of science available to benefit the field of human rights. This is the first Internet-based human rights organization, and it focuses on providing articles and news about human rights and human rights violations around the world. The site co-ordinates several human rights mailing lists, and publishes an Internet human rights journal. Catalaw : Legal Topics : Rights and Freedoms Provides a list of local and international links dealing with the issues of rights and freedoms, including cyber rights, constitutional law, privacy and information technology law. The U.S. and Australian sites are quite comprehensive in their scope and coverage. Links to other major sites are provided as well. Human Rights : Specific TopicsIndigenous Peoples Researching Indigenous Peoples Rights Under International Law Also known as the Indigenous Peoples Web Ring site, authored by librarian Steve Perkins, this research guide provides links and secondary source material on indigenous rights. Bill Henderson's Law Library: Aboriginal Law and Legislation Deals with aboriginal laws, and provides useful links to major jurisdictions such as Canada, United States, New Zealand, and Australia. Includes constitutional laws, federal laws, court decisions, claims commissions, and treaties. Links to many aboriginal resources are provided as well. The World Wide Web Virtual Library : Indigenous Studies The Center for World Indigenous Studies provides links for Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Central & South America, Europe, and the Pacific. This site, which is maintained in conjunction with the Australian National University's Aboriginal Studies WWW Virtual Library provides a comprehensive list of sources pertaining to the topic. International Gay & Lesbian Rights An excellent site dealing with gay and lesbian issues, with emphasis on Canadian case law. Provides exhaustive links to documents dealing with gay and lesbian rights. Internet Oracle's site contains a list of resources and some texts of documents devoted exclusively to gay and lesbian rights. Links to related sites are provided as well. Women's International Human Rights Women's Human Rights Resources (Bora Laskin Law Library, University of Toronto) This site provides an exhaustive and annotated listing of sites that are useful starting points for researching women's international human rights issues. Includes links to full-text conventions, reports, bibliographies, and articles by governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with women's human rights. |
