Who in the Law Library provides the infoEXPRESS service?
Sooin Kim, Faculty Services Librarian, is in charge of the service, assisted by Sufei Xu, Access Services Coordinator, as well as approximately fifteen hours of student help per week.
What are infoEXPRESS' hours of operation?
infoEXPRESS requests are processed year-round Monday through Friday, between9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., except for statutory holidays.
Who is eligible to use infoEXPRESS?
infoEXPRESS is a service intended exclusively for faculty members at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Regular and emeritus faculty and administrators who teach in the Faculty are eligible to use infoEXPRESS at all times. Visiting and cross-listed faculty are aslo eligible to use the service; , however, we ask that you limit your infoEXPRESS requests to materials that relate to your teaching and research at the Faculty.
How do I submit a request? Please send us your requests in writing, via e-mail to law.infoEXPRESS@utoronto.ca. Include as much citation information as possible, to allow us to identify immediately the materials you require.
How will I know that infoEXPRESS has received and is working on my request?
Upon receipt, infoEXPRESS will send you a (non-automated) e-mail confirmation of your request. We will also update you via e-mail regarding the status of your request, as necessary.
Should I stop using "law.ill@utoronto.ca" for document requests?
Yes. Although the law.ill@utoronto.ca account will remain active for use by students and law firms, faculty should now submit requests to
law.infoexpress@utoronto.ca, as this is a priority service.
How long does it take to receive a requested item?
We will do everything in our power to provide you with requested materials within one to three business days. However, response time may vary depending on the availability of the item. For example, items that need to be searched, recalled or borrowed through interlibrary loan may take longer. We will notify you if we are not able to provide you with material within three business days and continually update you on our efforts to retrieve your requested item.
If I send a list of items, how long will it take for infoEXPRESS to retrieve all of the items on the list?
When you send a list of items to infoEXPRESS, we will deliver the materials to you as we receive them, rather than waiting to compile all of them for a one-time delivery. You should allow at least two weeks to receive all of the items on a list of more than three items. .
May I request items on a "rush" basis?
If you have an emergency rush request, we will do our best to provide you with the materials you need on an accelerated basis. Please be sure to indicate the date and time you need the material in your request. However, please bear in mind that, depending on availability of materials and staff, infoEXPRESS cannot always promise to meet your rush deadline. We ask your cooperation in minimizing rush requests, as this interrupts our workflow and disrupts regular service to your colleagues. Whenever possible, please plan ahead so that your needs may be met within our normal quick delivery period of one to three business days.
Will infoEXPRESS go to other libraries to retrieve materials for me?
Yes! We will retrieve materials from other libraries on this campus, from other U of T campuses, or from other libraries around the world (via interlibrary loan).
Whom should I contact to check the status of a request or report a problem?
Please contact Sooin Kim via e-mail to law.infoexpress@utoronto.ca.
In which format — paper or electronic — will I receive my items?
Whenever possible, we give you a choice! If the item you request is available in a page-image format (such as Hein Online) or as a downloadable resource on a reliable website (such as Ontario e-Laws), infoEXPRESS will send you the item as an e-mail attachment, which you can print yourself, if you wish. However, if you prefer to receive the item in paper, just let us know when you send in your request. We will be glad to print the item and deliver it to you. Items not available electronically will of course be delivered in paper.
How are paper items delivered to me?
The infoEXPRESS Cart makes its daily delivery round starting at2 p.m., Monday through Friday. We will knock on your door; if you are not in your office, we will unlock the door and place materials on your office chair. Only Library staff members will enter your office; student workers are not permitted to make office deliveries.
Will infoEXPRESS prepare my requests according to my personal copying or processing preferences?
We regret that at this time infoEXPRESS is unable to fill requests using customized copying or processing preferences, as we do not have sufficient staff or budget to provide special handling. Please rely on secretarial or student research assistance to prepare the materials we locate for you in any special manner you may require.
May I still request copies from the new acquisitions display?
Yes. The new acquisitions are now displayed in the "New Arrivals" section on the main floor of the Library. Simply fill out the copy request slips and copies of the items you request will be delivered to your office via the infoEXPRESS cart.
Can infoEXPRESS help me if I am browsing the shelves in the Law Library and find a book chapter or article that I want copied?
Yes! Simply bring the item to infoEXPRESS Headquarters, located at the rear of the short-term loan area behind the Circulation Desk. You will see the infoEXPRESS Copy Request tray clearly marked. Just fill out a copy request slip and place it in the book; then leave the book in the tray. The copies you request will be delivered to your office via the infoEXPRESS cart. infoEXPRESS Headquarters is accessible even when the Library is officially closed, so you may leave your copy requests in the tray at any time (infoEXPRESS would like to thank Karen Knop for this terrific idea!).
Should I now use infoEXPRESS to copy items for my casebook?
We request that you continue to use student casebook assistants for your regular casebook needs.
May my student research assistant use infoEXPRESS on my behalf?
infoEXPRESS is a personal service intended exclusively for faculty members at the Faculty of Law. Your research assistants must retrieve and copy materials for research and submit interlibrary loans for you on their own, outside of the infoEXPRESS system. Research assistants may not forward requests to infoEXPRESS on your behalf.
How do I return borrowed books and interlibrary loan materials that infoEXPRESS delivers to me? Materials may be returned in several ways:
(1) You may give materials to be returned to the infoEXPRESS staff person making deliveries. For your convenience, during the delivery run each business day, the infoEXPRESS Cart will stop at each faculty office floor in Flavelle and Falconer (including the third floor of the Library) and ring its bell. This will alert you to the fact that the Cart is on your floor and available to pick up materials for return to the Library;
(2) You may return materials to the Faculty Drop Boxes located near the faculty mail areas in Falconer and Flavelle; or
(3) You may send materials to the Law Library through campus mail, addressed to "infoEXPRESS."
May I also return books borrowed from other libraries in these ways?
Yes! We will return your materials to other libraries on campus, as well as return books borrowed through interlibrary loan to their home libraries.
Can infoEXPRESS help me manage my interlibrary loan and special collections materials, which have accelerated due dates, so that I don't have overdue books?
Yes! You will recieve e-mail notices regarding due dates for short-term loan, and recalled materials from the central library system, you will also receive e-mail reminders from infoEXPRESS regarding upcoming due dates of interlibrary loan items. You will receive "pink slips" when you have interlibrary loan material that is overdue.
What about managing the materials I've borrowed from the regular collection?
You will continue to receive e-mail notices from the central library system regarding books and materials that you've borrowed from the regular collections at the U of T campuses, including items from the regular Law Library collection.
Often I borrow materials intending to look at them, but I don't get a chance to do that before they are due. If I return them, I fear I will forget about them and miss potentially important research information. Can infoEXPRESS help me manage this situation?
Yes! Along with this guide you will have received a pad of special purple infoEXPRESS book flags. Before returning a book (even one that was not delivered to you by infoEXPRESS) simply fill out the information on the flag, including your name, the date you returned the book and when you would like to see the book again (e.g., one month). Your request will be entered into the infoEXPRESS database and we will deliver the book to you again at the time you specify. If the book is not available at that time (e.g., it has been checked out by another patron), we will notify you and set in motion the process to retrieve it. If you run out of these book flags, simply send an e-mail to infoEXPRESS and we will deliver another pad to your office. (infoEXPRESS would like to thank Jenny Nedelsky for this great solution to a common problem!) Gosh, is there anything infoEXPRESS won't do for me? There are two things infoEXPRESS cannot do:
- infoEXPRESS cannot violate copyright laws. Of course, we know that you do not knowingly ask us to violate the law! This situation arises most often when you ask us to copy material that constitutes more than our guideline of 10% of the entire item, such as an entire journal issue. If one of your requests raises a copyright concern, we will contact you to work out a satisfactory solution.
- infoEXPRESS cannot purchase materials on your behalf. This situation arises most often when you are seeking filed court documents or other materials not commercially published. We will provide you with all of the information necessary for you or your secretary to order these materials for yourself.
This guide provides all the information you need to get started using infoEXPRESS. If you have further questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Chief Librarian John Papadopoulos at john.papadopoulos@utoronto.ca. or at 416-978-4290
